National Geographic Photo of the Day

Honored to be chosen for National Geographic Photo of the Day - April 16, 2016

I took this photo in the South of Iceland from a glider that had just been dropped off by a small plane (pictured below). Was a wonderful and magical experience to circle above this land so rich with geothermal activity and the texture of old lava flows. I was amazed by how quiet it is to fly in a glider, compared to small planes.

Smithsonian Editor's Favorite

Happy my picture from Yellowstone last fall was just awarded a Smithsonian Editor's Favorite. Took this picture in the early morning, just around sunrise, above the geothermal pools around Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic. After first circling around the Grand Prismatic, which we found to be almost invisible from above and covered by a heavy layer of steam due to the very temperatures of the water and the very cold morning air, we explored the surrounding areas - the site of the most concentrated geothermal basin in the country.

This photo wasn't published, but I took it at the same time as the one above. These small geysers remind me of the volcanoes of Antione St Exupery's Le Petit Prince.
